Everyone who takes part in our Immigrant Mentorship Program comes in with a unique background, set of skills, and goal in mind. One of our mentees, Aditi Das, shares the story of her journey with NWPB below:
I originally discovered NWPB's immigrant mentorship program while participating in a training program at the YMCA of St. Catharines from January to May this year. This program aims to assist and train newcomers to Canada in finding a career of their interest through various employment related workshops. I was introduced to NWPB by my program instructor, Miriam Cooper.
There are two main reasons why I joined NWPB’s Mentorship Program. First, I wanted to utilize NWPB’s huge database of information to get a glimpse of the labour market analyses and learn more about the employment trends, statistics, as well as prospective job sectors in the Niagara region. Second, the Mentorship Program allowed me to connect with professionals who have several years of experience working in the area of my interest.
Through this program, I met my mentor, Dr. Rose Buitenhuis, who is a Research Scientist in Biological Control at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. Her advice and guidance were instrumental in the preparation of impactful resumes and cover letters for jobs related to industry and academia. She showed me how to highlight my key competencies and intent to increase productivity for my potential employers through short but effective language. She also emphasized the importance of professional networking and conducted mock interviews to boost my confidence and oral communication skills.
I now share a healthy relationship with my mentor and I cherish this experience. The Mentorship Program has brought many good changes in my life. I not only have a job that I enjoy now but I can also say with certainty that I’m on the right track to build my dream career. The program coordinators regularly keep me updated with potential business and networking opportunities in the Niagara Region. I have met many new people and have gained useful insight into various job responsibilities. I now trust my ability to integrate with the Canadian workforce and society. I strongly recommend the Mentorship Program to my family, friends, and all newcomers to Canada who aim to build a successful career in this beautiful country and experience professional and intellectual growth.
