Niagara Workforce Planning Board works in partnership with both the District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board on information-sharing projects and presentations to help adjust perceived skills misalignments in the local workforce, and to build new and stronger connections between employers, educators, and students in Niagara.
The DSBN and NCDSB host regular info sessions for students, in which members of NWPB's research team provide up-to-the-moment insight into career prospects for Niagara's youth, with a particular focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) industries, as well as the skilled trades. NWPB also partners with the NCDSB on their annual Pathways Speaker Summit, which gives local employers the opportunity to provide first-hand insight into the needs of their industries as panel speakers and presenters.
These efforts are also enhanced through NWPB’s provision of additional local labour market data, which can be integrated into teaching materials and parent information packages by participating educators.
Recognizing that a project of this scope requires on-going dialogue and support, NWPB is taking an active role in this initiative with the goal of addressing systemic issues of youth retention and skills alignment.
Alongside the provision of labour market data, NWPB’s role in these projects also includes personal and logistical support of career planning presentations for the DSBN and NCDSB, including:
Benefits for Students
Students benefit from the most current outlook on the state of the local labour force, as well as hearing directly from employers. This empowers young people to plan their future careers around inside knowledge of current and emerging opportunities within their fields of interest.
Benefits for Educators
Through this community engagement opportunity, educators can gain valuable insight into the steps that secondary school students can take toward their future careers. Equipped with this knowledge, educators can then work toward building and adapting educational programs around ensuring that future workers have the right skill sets to meet the needs of employers.
Benefits for Employers
Employers benefit from the opportunity to highlight their workplaces’ in-demand skills and discuss the current and future career prospects that students and job-seekers can find within their industry.
Niagara’s employers are the greatest authority on the skills their workers need to have. Participating employers who partner with NWPB and educators for speaker summits and data sharing provide a unique inside view into the practical needs of their industries, which students can carry forward into their career planning. This insight also allows educators to adapt their approach to instruction and skills training to better align with the day-to-day needs of the working world.
This project is an important component in Niagara’s endeavour to narrow perceived skills gaps in the workforce.
